Cancer Screening Leads to Early Detection

Brenda Davis never imagined a chance conversation with Dr. Joel Schumacher would save her life.

Davis says she was visiting OurClinic @ Centier in 2015 when she mentioned to Dr. Schumacher how she hadn’t had a female exam in several years. She’d put it off because she thought she was in good health and had no plans to have more children, but still the issue lingered in the back of her mind.

“Nobody had stressed the importance of seeing an OBGYN as often as I do now,” Davis says. “As you get older, you wonder, ‘why do I still need to go?’ I wanted to know.”

Dr. Schumacher encouraged Davis to have an exam, so she scheduled a pap test at the clinic, which she could access through a health benefit with her job as a verification associate at Centier Bank in Merrillville, Indiana.

“If the clinic wasn’t here, I probably wouldn’t have gone,” Davis admits. “If I had to make an appointment to see someone else, I’m pretty sure I would have put it off.”

Davis had the pap test in late 2015, and when the results came back, the nurse told her she had an “abnormality” and needed to make an appointment with an OBGYN.

“When the OBGYN read my report, he told me I was in the beginning stages of cancer,” Davis says. “You don’t know how to respond to that.”

Davis found out she had cervical cancer and needed a hysterectomy. “There’s no real symptoms,” she says. “You don’t know you have it until it’s almost too late.”

Within weeks, Davis had the surgery, which she credits to saving her life. Now cancer-free, Davis says she thinks back to the conversation she had with Dr. Schumacher in 2015 and how it led to her surgery and changed the course of her life.

“After having the surgery, I was in the clinic to see Dr. Joel to do some follow-up on how I was doing,” Davis says. “He asked if I was upset because of the surgery and I told him, ‘I couldn’t be upset with you, because you saved my life.’”

Davis says she’s now taking better care of her health, including getting tested every 3-4 months to ensure she remains cancer-free. She says having the clinic onsite at work and the quality of care she has received has made a tremendous impact on her health.

“I am truly blessed and grateful to have a medical staff here in the clinic who really cares about our health and well-being. Where I am not just a number, but a patient with a name and the staff is concerned about making sure we are at our best.”
